Modern Hardwood Table Base

Over the holidays we were contacted by a lovely couple in need of a Hardwood Table Base to replace their existing Glass top table with metal legs currently being used as their table base. Unfortunately, their current metal table base became unsafe and in need of something more stable and secure. They were having several visitors for the holidays and wanted to use their new table to entertain for the holidays. The customers wanted a modern yet clean look to match their home finished with a black matte paint to match their existing chairs.

After reviewing the design the customers wanted it was time to get to work! We began by selecting Red Oak for the Hardwood Table base. This species is easy to work, mill and finish.  First we milled all the material to the customers specs by planing, jointing to get a straight edge and then cutting to specific widths on the table saw to easily manufacture the legs and table base. Once the material was milled we began by making the legs. Joining all four pieces together with wood glue and clamps. After 24-36 hrs of dry time we were ready to assemble the table base sides. Again using 2″ x 3″ boards we created all sides of the base by using wood glue and stainless steel nails to ensure secure joints. The Kreg tool/screws were used to ensure no screws were visible. Once all four sides were assembled, we let sit to dry 24-36 hrs. Finally the last step was to paint the table base black matte. Using the spray gun we sprayed the bottom of the table first allowing to dry about 1 hr then flipped over to topside and repeated the process several times to ensure all crevices and corners were completely painted. Once the table was finished we were ready for delivery. We delivered the table only to find out the table was too big. The dimensions provided by the customers were over by 10″. They were so disappointed they had made the mistake on the measurements but we were glad to fix the mistake. We remeasured table, disassembled the table, cut the sides to new specs and assembled the table again.  Lastly, we applied clear coat matte finish to the table base.  Although the table was a few days later than originally expected they were so happy they had a secure and stable table to use for not only the holidays but their everyday use !
