Project Details

The couple we manufactured this Walnut Butcher-block for was renovating an older home and wanted a clean rustic look for their kitchen center island. They weren’t sure what type of species of wood to use but had seen a previous Walnut Butcher-block we had constructed on our social media. After supplying a sample to the client they were sure they wanted to use the American Walnut for their kitchen center island. We hand selected the most unique pieces of American Walnut we had in stock and began the production process! We used 8/4 American Walnut to construct the center island. Once the pieces were selected we first began planing the wood ensuring a smooth and even thickness. Next, we put them on the jointer for a straight edge and lastly on the table saw to create an even width for all pieces. We began the joining process. Once the boards were joined we let sit overnight to ensure it was completely dry. Lastly we applied the two bread ends with glue and mortesen tenen  to ensure strength and durability.  The next morning we sanded to a smooth uniform finish and completed the top with 320 grit finish sand and wiped clean with mineral oil. Next we sealed the top and bottom of the piece with food grade mineral oil. This process was applied about two more times to both the top and bottom of the butcher-block to ensure all the oil had soaked through.  Ultimately creating a uniform color and finish. Overall the customer was ecstatic with the outcome of the piece and matched perfectly in her kitchen. Their vision came to life! We were very happy to be a part of making their new house their home!

Learn More About American Walnut

American Walnut Hardwood Lumber is one the most sought-after Domestic Hardwoods on the market in North America today. American Walnut lumber is usually sold un-selected for its natural color variations. The heartwood is highly rot  and decay resistant. Although American Walnut Hardwood takes stain very well, oiling it is the best choice for treatment and finishing. Common uses for American Walnut wood are high-end furniture, cabinetry, and doors. In most recent years, this supreme domestic hardwood species has been used for butcher-block counter tops especially in upgraded kitchen applications.
